The Rakaia Zig Zag course traditionally turned on an excellent day with 46 drivers ready to attack the course. The weather was perfect being a little overcast after last year’s scorcher. These cooler conditions were a welcome change.
The road started off quite corrugated for the first indian file run but after the first run seemed to cut off quite flat.
The day saw many varied mechanical problems which included car 7 having a light roll over off the first bend which can be a little tricky after launching off the start line all fired up and into a right hand 90 bend. It was great to see it back on all fours to complete the days runs.
Other mechanical problems included Chris Herdman blowing his diff and Barry Deuart snapping his gear lever off (maybe being a little ambitious to find that next gear!) Thanks to a portable welder repaired it for the next run. Josh Marston broke a rear drive shaft off the start line but thanks to a donor tow car in the pits, found a replacement part to complete the remaining runs. The first 9 places were taken by 4wd cars with John Giltrap 1st home in his Subaru.
Brent Rawstron in his Porsche was the first 2wd car.
Prize giving and and few social drinks finished off the day at the Hororata Hotel. All in all a fantastic days racing and thank you to the event organizers and officials for an enjoyable days racing.
